DAY 7..........its been a week now....168 hrs and 10080 minutes hungry!!

DAY 7

Its been a week now since the Satyagrahis led by Dawa Lepcha and 20 year old Tenzing Lepcha started their indefinite Hunger strike. Time seems to have past so fast for the rest of Sikkim and the world but not for the ones going hungry all these days. Doctors from STNM have checked on the Satyagrahis and taken their blood and urine samples. Dawa seems fine but young Tenzing complained of a little chest pain and looked pale.

Lamas continue with the Nesol Puja. The Kalimping Youth Association paid a visit. Besides, politicians from opposition parties and wellwishers have been pouring in as usual.

Energy experts today are of the opinion that foreign investors are wary of investing in hydro capacity, which is both capitalintensive, with long construction periods, and often subject to water management regimesthat may conflict with power generation. But in India, and may be elsewhere in the third world countries, "Development" comes at a huge price, and profitable too. Otherwise how come in Sikkim the project developers for proposed hydel projects include names like GAti, Amalgamated Transpower Ltd, SMCC Pvt. Ltd., Him Urja, Jal Power Corporation Ltd., Sneha Power Projects, GVK Industries, Nagarjuna Holdings, TCI Finance, Shyam Energy who have no connection with hydro power industry. heir earlier profiles does not include commissioning of a single Hydro project. In India at least, they have never developed a single hydro project! And what about these Hyderabad connections - all most 50 per cent of the developers in Sikim are Hyderabd based!

Please don't try to destroy growth of Sikkim. Sikkim could generate lot of revenue from this hydro power projects. All this investment is helping the poor people by providing jobs. I have been to Sikkim, it’s a less densely populated space, even though people has to be relocated land is not a problem. If look at the developing nations they became prosperous by properly using natural resources. Cheap electricity means industry could also take benefit. How many people is going to get new jobs have think about that ? All these people who are going to get jobs again going to contribute to the economy. Don’t protest for the sake of protest. Don’t axe development!!!

Can any one of you answer these questions? I'll treat you at Bakers Cafe if ya do...its a promise!!

Can anybody have an answer or data to these questions? Serious and thinking ones eh……..

Do write in ok ?

1. How much electricity (in megawatt) does Sikkim require to have uninterrupted electricity? Include Rural rate figures, urban rate figures and commercial figures?

2. How much increase in generating electricity (in megawatt) does Sikkim need every 10 years till the year 2100 to cater to growing population and other growth related activities?

3. How much money does it cost to pay for a megawatt and how much money does one make by selling a megawatt of electricity.

4. Does the term megawatt and its description mean generation of electricity at a given time…that is 1 second?

5. What is the potential figure of electricity (in megawatt) produced from as many mini hydel projects(jalipool, lachen ,etc) (along with supposedly potential) wind energy and solar energy to strike a balance in sustainibility?

6. Can any other industry provide for economic prosperity and sustainability other than these hydel projects?

7. Last Question………..and the most important…………………. What is the profit we make by selling almost 4500 megawatt of electricity for 30 years? (in figures)

What is the loss we make by destroying the forests and the ecology? (in figures)

Come on…there has to be figures.

Scientists study and recommend to the authorities saying that these huge projects are feasible.

I defy any scientist in the world or anybody in the world to answer these questions……of course ...............Questions 1 to 5 are ok in arriving in figures.

I then defy and challenge you to answer the last question (What is the loss we make by destroying the forests and the ecology) in figures?
