Its really sad that Dawa and his friends had to resort to a hunger strike.. but when no one listens to u thats what you have to do... Satyagraha...I hope you will be able to make the government pay heed to your concerns...I visited in Dzongu in January and met Dawa and other ACT members.. I was on an assignment there to carry out a study on the upcoming dams in North East.Dozongu is probably one of the most beautiful places in our country with dense evergreen forests and rare fauna.... The rivers Ryonghcuu and Teesta are home to over 50 species of fishes.. with many of them migratory.. during the lean seasons there will just a trickle downstream of the dam..The series of dams in the region would play havoc with both the terrestial and aquatic ecology...There is a need to study the environmental impacts on the flora and fauna due to teesta 5 after it is commissioned.. Only then should the work on the dams be allowed to start.. This senseless destruction is definately not the way to go. My best wishes to ACT...

DAY 8
DAY 8The indefinite hunger strike by Satyagrahis and members of Affected Citizens of Teesta led by Dawa Lepcha and Tenzing Lepcha enters its 8th day. While Dawa has been admitted to hospital, he continues the hunger strike there. The rest of the members on hunger strike along with Tenzing Lepcha continue their hunger strike at Bl House.
Meanwhile support from well wishers and concerned people and organisations has been pouring in from various quarters.
The President of Darjeeling District Rong Ong Prongzum has written to the Hon'ble Chief Minister of Sikkim with copies forwared to The Chairman of the National Commission of Tribal Affairs and the Ministry of Tribal Affairs, Government of India. The said letter appeals to the Hon'ble Chief Minister of Sikkim to review the mega hydro electric projects planned for Dzongu and its adjoining areas which the Lepchas consider sacred.

Some more pics.....info......

The Teesta Project at Kalijhora between Siliguri and Teesta. I'm sure, no one has escaped this sight. Its the ugliest thing heaped on nature by Man in this part of the world. Its nothing less than rape!! In less than 5 years this sight will be common all the way from sevoke till Gangtok with all the dams being commisioned. the most beautiful streches of the highway like Melli Rangpo etc.....there will be nothing left for our children to see. In fact in a few decades and 1 or 2 generations down, our children will only get to see the rivers maybe at Vajra hall or Denzong hall in VIRTUAL REALITY!!!!Swear!! it is a possibility!!
We talk adventure tourism etc...sadly..there wont be rafting in Sikkim's rivers anymore......maybe trekking and other eco tourism related activities too wont be interesting anymore!!!

This picture of the orchid is the rarest of the rarest found only in Dzongu and only at the place where the Panan Project is supposed to come up. It is found nowhere in the world except there! (Sorry friends, i dont know the scientific and the common name of it. I will try and know it and post it later.......please forgive my igonorance on this.....) Am sure our best expert on Orchids in Sikkim, Mohan Pradhan can enlighten us on it further. Please do write in. U Guys ever read Mohan's book or known bout it.....yes.......no...........??????

Message to all viewers, supporters and sympathisers from Dawa and friends
007 DaysDays before the 20th of June, 2007, we were a little apprehensive but the overwhelming support that has come in from all quarters have reassuared us (from day one) that we are not in the wrong direction and that we are not alone.
By now many people have come to know about the issue that is imperceptively creeping in like AIDS. Let us take care like they say on the boards,"Prevention is better than cure”. Let us all stand together and prevent the diseases before its too late.
Why do we have to go for so many mega projects? Why cant we do with mini/micro project(not involving dams and tunnels). We need to develop and progress but not in the way it is planned(hydro projects in Sikkim).
Before I run out of energy, I would like to thank everybody on behalf of Affected Citizens of Teesta(ACT), to all supporters, well wishers and sympathizers for their unprecedented, generous and active support for the cause that all of us have taken up.
THANK YOU/ACHULAY
DAWA LEPCHA, TENZING LEPCHA
and MEMBERS OF AFFECTED CITIZENS OF TEESTA
ATTENTION!!!
Doctors from STNM had checked on Dawa and Tenzing yesterday. They had taken their blood and urine samples. Dawa's urine samples have detected things which the doctors say are indicative of his kidneys being prone to damage. Dawa is in the hospital at the moment but stands firm and reiterates his demands and says the indefinite hunger strike shall go on in the hospital too. Tenzing on the other hand looks very pale too continues his hunger strike at B L House,Tibet Road

I have posted a link to your site on my own blog after hearing about the struggle of the Lepcha from a friend who worked in Sikkim. Do not despair, as there are people both within and outside of India trying to make sure that your struggle is known and that your concerns are listened to.Stay strong,

My daughter who recently visited your fabulous state, informed me about your action. The only comment I can provide you with from a rainy Netherlands is, keep faith on the positive outcome of your action. As you indicated in your article it is hard to convince large companies, but history several times learned that small actions can bring high impacts.
