FOREST ABOVE LACHEN
ZEMU RIVER(CHU)

National Hydro Electric Power Corp is planning to take up the 210 MW (3 x 70 MW) Lachen HEP Near village Zema chu in North Sikkim District of Sikkim. The project comprises a 85m high Concrete Gravity Dam, 6.0m dia 4.5 km Horseshoe shaped Head Race tunnel, 15m dia, 75m high restricted orifice type, 3.75m dia. 415m long Circular shaped bifurcating into three nos. Penstocks, Underground Power House, with 3 units of 70 MW each, Vertical Francis Turbine and a 6m dia., 400m long Horseshoe shaped Tail Race tunnel.
Agreement for the implementation of the project was signed between NHPC and Govt. of Sikkim in March 2006 and Stage-I Cost Estimate submitted to CEA in July 2006. The Rs.10469.3 million project will be commissioned within 60 months from zero date.
However, there is a stiff resistance to land aquisition for the said project from the residents of Lachen. They worship their natural surroundings which they consider holy and blessed.

DAY 29

Today is the 29th day and almost a month of the indefinite hunger strike. Dawa, Tenzing and Chunkipu are in the hospital, the relay hunger strike by Members and Supporters of ACT continues at BL House.

The Government has constituted a high level committee headed by the Chief Secretary to talk to ACT. Though, nothing came the outcome, both sides are optimistic.

However, the health of Tenzing and Dawa continues to deteriorate every passing hour.
