In other news several parts of North Bengal were flooded today following incessant rains in past 48 hours, causing suspension of work for the National Hydro-electric Power Corporation's (NHPC) third phase Teesta low dam project at Rambhi in Kalimpong, as river Teesta was in spate.
Incessant rains totally submerged the NHPC project site at Rambhi, about 40 km from here with equipment, machineries and materials worth Rs.160 crore remaining under water, said NHPC Chief Engineer S Khatua .
All the workers were taken to safer place, he said adding the project work could resume only after water level of Teesta returned to normal. The swollen river posed serious threat to Jalpaiguri town, which had been lashed by heavy downpour for the last 48 hours along with other parts of the district as several areas were waterlogged, official sources said.
